St Andrew’s Berwick Uniting Church, Victoria’s oldest church, was established in 1857 by Rev Alexander Duff (an Irish Presbyterian minister, based in Cranbourne). In the beginning, a wooden church was constructed. The beautiful heritage building that we see today was built on the 15th of February 1885. It was a truly visionary building, built to house more people than ever lived in Berwick.

The Berwick Hotel and St Andrew’s Berwick Church were the first two notable public buildings in Berwick.

In 2000, the Fellowship hall was built to replace the old hall. The Ministry Centre, which is now the Childcare Centre, was also opened in 1992.

It was originally called the Berwick Presbyterian church. 1935 saw the addition of the name “St Andrew’s”. It was incorporated into the Uniting Church in Australia in 1997.

The pipe organ is relatively new, having been added to the Dandenong Presbyterian Church’s early 2000’s.

The history of St Andrew’s Berwick UCA church, which hosted the Berwick Anglican congregation during its first 30 years, is fascinating. A 72-page book entitled “St. Russell Patterson, 2005. Andrew’s Uniting Church Berwick. A Celebrated Histories. On request, copies can be obtained at the church.
